There’s a choice to die a superhero or remain long enough to watch yourself as a villain,” it is said in The Dark Knight. Christian Bale is now a villain again, this time in Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder. The antagonist is formidable, and the story is true to the comic book plot well. The film also features the fan-favorite character, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). It also has the outrageous humor that is unique to director Taika Waititi. Love and Thunder is a standalone film that does not perform to the standard of Thor: Ragnarok (2017).
The poster art copyright is believed to belong to the distributor of the film, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the publisher, Marvel Studios, or the graphic artist.
Thor Love and Thunder Cinemavilla Review (2022)
Thor has been an integral part the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade, but his standalone films failed to hit the mark completely or did not hit the mark. Thor: The Dark World (2013) was a lousy entry. Thor: The Origins Story (2011) was a solid start. Yet, any list of top five MCU films will include Thor: Ragnarok (2017) certain. The Return of the Hemsworth/Taika Waititi collaboration brought expectations at an all-time high ahead of the release.
Gorr (Bale) Gorr (Bale), a god who wants to eliminate all gods hits New Asgard to steal Stormbreaker. Thor must stop the god-killer by joining forces with Tessa Thompson, Korg (Waititi) as well as Jane Foster, his ex-girlfriend who is now Mighty Thor. The story is easy to follow, unlike Marvel’s previous films, and the performances are excellent in the film. Hemsworth performs well as the character who has a midlife crisis, but Bale and Portman stand out. In a testament to Bale’s talents his pre-title credit scene stands. Gorr could be the new Thanos in the MCU. Bale adds a mysterious aspect to the character , but it’s not much more than that.
On the other one hand, Portman, who makes her return into the Marvel world after having missed the two previous Thor films, is the cancer-stricken ex-girlfriend who was chosen by Mjolnir. Given how Marvel seems to be willing to hand over the mantles of Hawkeye and, within a couple of months, Hulk, to women characters, I first expected that the Mighty Thor to be a similar tick mark in the representation checklist. The film is a touching story about an astrophysicist that is able to show her biceps throughout more scenes than one.
Marvel does its own flexing through the many cameos in the film. In addition to the Guardians of the Galaxy team there are Matt Damon, Sam Neill, and Luke Hemsworth reprising their roles from Thor: Ragnarok as Loki, Odin, and Thor respectively. Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone are also being portrayed as Hela as well as the director of the Asgardian play. Waititi who, has since Ragnarok has directed Jojo, the Oscar-winning Rabbit has returned to his genre of choice once more. There are hilarious scenes like the noisy goats Korg’s narration of Thor’s backstory, Thor doing leg-splitsand Valkyrie becoming the brand ambassador for Old Spice…
There’s also the running gag of Thor looking for his Mjolnir however being terrified by Stormbreaker’s jealousy. The problem is that these gags although effective, come at the expense of genuine emotion and serve to expose the wafer-thin plot as well. Thor: Love and Thunder is a film that explores many kinds of love, from a father/daughter bond to the intricate relationship between lovers who have fallen out… It’s parallels between Gorr losing his faith in the god he worships, Rapu, and Thor becoming disappointed by Zeus (played by Russell Crowe). The possibilities are endless however…
As usual, there are many easter eggs and even a few references to films like Interstellar as well as Harry Potter. We are shown a picture of the god of death, Falligar, taken straight from comic books. We see Hemsworth dressed in the original Thor costumes that comic book fans will recognize. When Thor takes on the world in the fight with Zeus and Zeus, we witness a tattoo saying ‘RIP Loki The helmet of the trickster inscribed on the back of our space Viking. We’re introduced to the evil Necrosword and also given the fact that Mjolnir and Stormbreaker appear to possess minds of their own and are able to control their own minds, it’s interesting to observe new weapons that have the ability to control individuals.
We’ve seen this before with the ten rings from Shang Chi, the magical bangle in Ms Marvel, and the Ebony Blade from the post-credits scene from Eternals. The line “Gods won’t empower you, but they will use to use you” from the new show by Marvel, Moonknight, feels very similar to the real world. A little of Valkyrie’s loss in war to her best friend , as well as Korg falling in love with a different Kronan man is included.
The first part of the movie reminds us of all the color we loved in Ragnarok, but much of the second part is set in a dark realm where everything is black and white. However, it is important to note that the monochrome action scenes are quite satisfying.
Hemsworth as Thor will remain in the role for the foreseeable future, and it’s an incredible relief for MCU fans who’ve watched the original Avengers or risk their lives, or hang up their heads.
